Turkey sold them gas.

A US Air Force C-17 landed at Vnukovo airport on Tuesday morning and was gone by the afternoon. To get it there, Washington asked Ukraine to stop striking Moscow and St Petersburg for three days, because it does not believe in the strength of Putin's air defences.

Kyiv agreed. The pause ran from 24th to 26th August. American officials have since confirmed that CIA Director John Ratcliffe was in Moscow that day.

The aircraft left Joint Base Andrews, stopped in Riga on 23rd August, and reached Vnukovo around ten in the morning local time. A US diplomatic motorcade was spotted. Neither government has said what the meetings were about. Peskov said he had no information about the plane or any meetings at all.

Ukraine was told a senior American delegation was coming. It was not initially told Ratcliffe was part of it, and expects a debrief afterwards.

That is third hand, anonymous, sourced from the adversary, and it happens to say exactly what Tehran would want said. Nothing firmer has surfaced.

The verified part is quite stranger anyway. Peace talks are stalled in the war's fifth year. Ukrainian drones have been reaching the Russian capital. And for seventy two hours, at American request, they held off.
