‘Not just a bunch of whiny cowboys’: at least four former Conservative MPs support Alberta’s separation from Canada

Who the four ex‑MPs are
According to The Hill Times, the former MPs backing separation are:

Jay Hill — former Harper cabinet minister, ex‑government House leader, former interim leader of the Maverick Party

Leon Benoit — former Alberta Conservative MP

Val Meredith — former Reform/Alliance/Conservative MP

Allan Kerpan — former Saskatchewan Reform/Alliance MP

All four say Alberta’s long‑standing economic and political grievances “will never be addressed within Canada,” making independence the only viable option.

Some UCP members are threatening to oust the premier. Here's how they plan to do it
Their strategy has three steps:

1. Get 22 constituency associations to sign on
Under Article 5.7 of the UCP bylaws, a special general meeting must be called if one‑quarter of all constituency associations (22 of 87) submit written requests.

These requests can explicitly demand a leadership review vote.

2. Force a leadership vote “at the earliest possible time”
Once triggered, Article 3.1 requires the party to hold the leadership review as soon as possible.

Smith would need only a simple majority to survive — but even a narrow win could be politically fatal, as past conservative leaders have learned.

3. Use anger over the referendum question to rally members
Rath and Sylvestre argue Smith “insulted” the base by refusing to put their preferred direct independence question on the October ballot.
They believe a majority of UCP members support a separation referendum and will punish Smith for not delivering it.

Debunking Separatist Claims: Kellerman strongly rejects the notion that an independent Alberta could easily retain Canadian citizenship, passports, the Canadian military, or a portion of the Canada Pension Plan (0:30 - 3:56). He emphasizes that the CPP is an individual entitlement based on work contributions, not a provincial asset.
Criticism of Political Strategy: The creator argues that Premier Smith and Pierre Poilievre are using the threat of separation as a political tool (4:00 - 6:35). He posits that their strategy is to use taxpayer-funded events to bash the federal government, promote conservative rhetoric, and frame their political opponents as the cause of all problems, rather than addressing actual governance.
The Danger of Uncertainty: Comparing the current situation to Quebec's historical separatist movements, Kellerman warns that politicians are "playing with fire" by unleashing forces they cannot control (7:26 - 8:00, 10:28 - 11:00). He notes that such uncertainty carries significant economic risks for the province.
Call to Action: The video serves as a critique intended to hold these politicians accountable, urging viewers to recognize the risks inherent in the separatist discourse and to "choose Canada" (9:56 - 11:43).

It's increasingly becoming unCanadian to be a Conservative and has been since Avro Arrow. This tagectory needs to be highlighted and scourged.

Case in point:

Four more former Conservative MPs want to separate from Canada and one wants to explore future with the United States

Why they say Alberta should leave
The four MPs cite:

Long‑standing grievances with Ottawa

Desire for more control over taxation, pensions, policing, firearms, property rights, and environmental regulation

Belief that Alberta could save up to $12 billion annually by taking over corporate tax collection, EI administration, and pension management

Who the four new pro‑separation ex‑MPs are
According to The Hill Times, the newly identified former MPs supporting Alberta independence are:

LaVar Payne

Art Hanger

Rob Anders

Eric Lowther

These four join another group of former Conservative MPs (Jay Hill, Leon Benoit, Val Meredith, Allan Kerpan) who had already declared support for separation earlier in June.
