Middle Power Strategy: Carney’s approach, termed "variable geometry," involves building a network of relationships across different countries to handle specific issues (e.g., critical minerals with Italy, defense with Germany and Norway) rather than relying solely on Washington (2:26-4:52).
G7 Accomplishments:
Initiated negotiations for Italian M-346 fighter jets (4:58).
Advanced cooperation on Type 212CD submarines with Germany and Norway (5:35-6:02).
Secured a critical minerals deal with Italy (5:13).
Revealed that Canada had early access to a preliminary Iran deal framework, signaling strong intelligence standing (6:17-7:43).
The "Hot Mic" Exchange: At a working lunch, Carney confronted Trump regarding Chinese EVs. He asserted a firm cap of 3% (49,000 vehicles) on the Canadian market. Trump reportedly responded, "That’s good. I like that," showcasing Carney’s ability to manage Trump’s temperament through direct, simplified communication (7:44-9:02).
Pattern of Engagement: Over the summit, Carney held seven separate, productive conversations with Trump, intended to build a pattern of positive engagement that makes it more difficult for Trump to act against Canadian interests later (9:33-10:21).

The Case for Unwinding: Worswick suggests that if the United States is unwilling to maintain Canada as part of its integrated supply chain (especially in the face of Donald Trump's tariffs), Canada should allow the sector to naturally wind down and instead embrace free trade in automobiles, similar to the approach taken by Australia (0:51 - 1:24).
Economic Reality vs. Romanticism: Worswick argues that the auto sector is a relatively small contributor to Canada's economy—representing only about 0.75% of GDP and 6% of employment—and warns that government efforts to force domestic production may increase costs for consumers already facing affordability challenges (2:57 - 3:14).
Long-term Structural Shifts: The decline in Canadian auto production began long before current trade tensions, driven by factors like NAFTA and the subsequent expansion of global trade agreements with Japan, Korea, and Europe (4:30 - 6:43).
Future Prosperity: Instead of focusing on traditional manufacturing, Worswick advocates for prioritizing education, innovation, and services as the primary drivers of Canada's future standard of living. He suggests that displaced workers could transition into sectors like defense procurement or niche manufacturing (10:41 - 14:15).
Innovation Ecosystem: The conversation highlights a broader concern that Canada tends to protect incumbent industries rather than fostering the 'creative destruction' and startup-friendly environment necessary for modern economic growth (16:48 - 18:02).

It's a sacrifice I am willing to make. Burn it down to the studs then rebuild a whole new 100% Canadian industry. We can't hitch our wagon to not only a tree stump but an anchor that is rapidly sinking and will take us with it. An industry that has now totally catered to F150 large gas guzzlers and SUV's that are worthless on the world market and are only viable in the north american market is a dead end. Might as well invest in horse and buggy stocks.

All we have to do is look at things like the Bricklyn to realize that we can make some amazing things that no one will buy.

Let it die. If China can build what we need, we should just buy it. In mist cars you can pull the fuse for the Telemetry unit, and it stops phoning home. Some, you can't.
