Carney says Canada pursued 'every opportunity' to reach deal as Trump's new tariffs take effect

Post by hitest »

In a statement late Friday, Carney said Canada is suspending trade talks with the United States and recalling its negotiating team, saying the U.S. made "unfair" last-minute changes to the deal.

CUSMA is the law in all 3 countries. By levying tariffs by any means, the US is breaking the law. El Presedente does not have the authority to defy Congress, and he will be embarrassed once again in court. And Smoot-Holey is the dumbest tool in the drawer.

The US wanted:

Restrictions on Canada's future trade deals
Restrictions on Canadian auto exports
A say in Canadian language policy
A say in Canadian culture

That's an attempt to dictate how Canada conducts itself as a sovereign country.

Moments ago: Premier Ford’s first scrum since trade talks with the U.S. fell apart.

“Let me tell you about President Trump: President Trump is the type of person that would steal your lunch money the first day. He'd steal the toque off your head the second day. And the third day he'd steal your running shoes. He is not to be trusted whatsoever. We need to stay united.”

United Front: Premier Kinew emphasizes that the provincial government is "100% united" with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other Canadian leaders in opposing what he describes as unjustified and immoral trade barriers (0:32-1:03).
Economic Protection: The province intends to work closely with the federal government to support workers and industries, particularly those targeted by US tariffs like heavy vehicle manufacturing and steel (3:31-4:19).
Strategic Response: Manitoba is preparing to utilize its US Trade Council to coordinate responses, including tax deferrals for businesses and a continued focus on procurement that favors Canadian firms over American ones (4:26-5:12, 6:08-6:40).
Provincial Initiatives: The Premier highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen the provincial economy, including investments in Manitoba Hydro, the expansion of the Port of Churchill, and partnerships with Indigenous nations for wind energy projects (12:31-12:56).
Long-term Outlook: Premier Kinew suggests that while the current administration is "deeply flawed," he remains confident in the long-term relationship between the two nations once the current political climate changes (6:51-7:10, 10:38-11:54).

The Breakdown: Negotiations failed after the Trump administration and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer reportedly attempted to impose last-minute conditions that would restrict Canada's ability to form trade deals with other nations and dictate the sale of critical minerals (4:42 - 6:02).
Canada's Response: Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly rejected these demands, characterizing them as an "extortion racket" and a betrayal of a historic ally. He emphasized Canada's economic resilience, citing its G7 fiscal strength and the development of new, independent trade corridors with Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and Africa (0:18 - 1:14; 3:45 - 4:07).
Geopolitical Context: The narrator argues that the U.S. strategy relies on outdated 1980s-style bully politics, aiming to create a captive market for resources like lithium and cobalt to counter China. However, the video contends that this approach has failed to fracture Canada, which has instead responded with national solidarity (1:26 - 2:16; 6:17 - 6:54).
The Threat of Subversion: The video warns that since direct negotiations failed, Washington may pivot to "systemic political subversion," attempting to exploit internal Canadian provincial divisions—particularly citing separatist rhetoric in Alberta—to destabilize the federal government (8:45 - 9:28).
The video concludes by calling for Canadian national unity and firm resistance against what it describes as an attempt to compromise Canada's sovereignty (10:22 - 11:22).

A resistance galvanized is rock solid on resolve and magnitude times harder to crack. Habits become rituals. Trade routes adjust accordingly.

1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act: Despite warnings from economists, the U.S. raised duties on 20,000+ products. Canada retaliated with its own tariffs, leading to a massive collapse in trade (1:02-1:42).
1971 Nixon Import Surcharge: The U.S. imposed a 10% surcharge on imports, but Canada successfully negotiated an exemption within four months (1:42-1:56).
Softwood Lumber Disputes: Since the 1980s, the U.S. has targeted Canadian lumber five times. International trade bodies like NAFTA and the WTO have consistently sided with Canada, forcing the U.S. to return billions in collected duties (1:57-2:19).
Why Canada Remains Resilient:
Diversification: Canada has focused on building international trade deals and training its workforce to reduce reliance on the U.S. (3:28-3:37).
Economic Strength: Foreign investment in Canada is growing at a rate unseen in two decades, and the country boasts strong job growth (3:40-3:49).
Energy Leverage: Canada supplies a significant portion of U.S. crude oil and natural gas imports, giving it considerable strategic leverage (3:50-4:03).
The video concludes that the current trade collapse follows a predictable pattern: the U.S. imposes tariffs, Canada stands firm, and the U.S. eventually retreats once the economic damage to its own industries becomes clear (3:07-3:22).

Listen to Carney's speech. Many minutes fo calm, coherent, logical step by step explanation.
Compare it to demented rambling lies that Trump will come out with, Who to believe, eh?
No mentions of lumber, BC and Bew Brunswick say fuck you.
Quebec says fuck you over dairy.
Doug Ford clearly says fuck you.
Manitoba said fuck you first.
Will we her fom Alberta and Sask, the two premiers so spineless they wouldn't even support a liquor ban?

Time to send Pete Huckster and Howard Nutlick home as persona non grata
