Yemeni forces used Claude to help develop a missile, Anthropic says

Some military personnel in northern Yemen, reportedly linked to the Houthis, used the AI model instead of engineers: Claude wrote code for the missile guidance system, configured the autopilot, simulated the flight and assembled the firmware.

They bypassed Anthropic’s safeguards by hiding the connection to weapons and breaking the development process into seemingly harmless tasks.

One of the missiles was even tested but crashed. A few hours later, the military personnel returned to Claude to figure out what had gone wrong.

Geopolitical Significance: The Houthis are targeting the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical maritime route that has gained importance due to restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis have stated that Saudi Arabia is prohibited from using this waterway (1:11-1:17, 4:04-4:13).

Iraq’s government has moved fast to identify the origin of the attack on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline today.

Following Iraq-based Iranian-backed militia strikes on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and the Saudi government deferring to the Iraqi government to handle the immediate situation in country, Iraq’s prime minister’s office has said that after an investigation, the origin of the attack was Maysan Province, Iraq. Subsequently, the commander of the Maysan Operations Command was dismissed.
