These Ugly Big Box Stores are Literally Bankrupting Cities
US economy is geared towards these big box stores. All require access to cheap goods that are all internationally sourced. They are all going to collapse under the tariffs as they depend on just in time supply and non union labour. Zero slack in the margins and no investment in local community. So no shock absorbing in the times of shock like say monday...

Not seeing a downside.
I hate those stores. They are what killed The Bay. I tried for months to find a bathroom scale. Do you know how hard it is to find one?
Last time I went in to a Bay store at Christmas, there was all sorts of stuff I didn't want, and no one around to ask where what I wanted was. I wanted Winter wear for kids. Gloves, touques, socks . . . for a Christmas hamper the place I work was setting up. They had nothing. I had to go to a box store for that, and the quality was shit. I hate that The Bay didn't have the good stuff.
I have so far avoided dollar stores. Wish me luck. Never been in one, not going to start.

They opened a Staples in Prince George and literally killed every sationery store and home based printshop within 250 miles of it, including mine.
Kept mine going for a few years doing tiny jobs, using paper & stationery supplies from their house brands. But suddenly there was no selection of 8x14 colours in stock. The 750 pk of tear-away business cards was gone, replaced by a 250 pk for a dime less than the Avery 250 pkg.
More cleaning products and coffees at double the price, projectors for waste of time office meetings. Entire paper selection is now less than one aisle.
Got a call from their head office that noticed me in a business catalogue. Get a 'special' business price which I never used in 5 years as I can buy things retail elsewhere at a better price.
Now people drive 4 hours twice to order and pick up for a set of memorial cards and shit over a price i wouldn't have dared charged half of delivering them to their door overnight.
