My take: Carney’s Vimy Ridge story turns history into a powerful metaphor for the Canada–EU relationship. Those acorns survived the wreckage of war, took root across the Atlantic, and a century later returned to France, not as relics, but as living evidence of renewal.

The EU has dragged its feet on free trade with Canada for 10 years. It has allowed Ukraine to be raided and pillaged since 2014. France, Spain and Poland have upcoming elections that threaten to have pro-Russian governments installed. Add to all of this that the EU has made Canada look like a military superpower by gdp per capita spending until only recently. There are a LOT of warts on this frog but we don't have a lot of other suitors sadly and the orange-ex is getting very handsy. Leader of the free world has a nice ring to it but you need to have the EU not only sign on but follow through quickly. Something that has never been seen before.

Andrew seems more hopeful than I. He sees the motivational fundamentals that have pushed the EU and Canada into this shotgun wedding to begin with. Merging financial payments is a good example and also being a template for other nations in waiting for a similar arrangements such as Australia. There has been a lot going on behind the scenes before this happened and will continue to do so as long as orange man bloviates. Let's hope those backroom talks get serious fast.
