Goodbye EV sales mandate, hello purchase rebates. Carney shakes up Canada's auto industry

EV Sales Mandate is Gone
- The previous requirement that all new vehicles be electric by 2035 is being repealed.
- Carney calls the mandate “unpopular” and says industry and provinces (notably Ontario) pushed for its removal.

New Emissions Standards (2027–2032)
- Canada will more than double the stringency of vehicle GHG standards for model years 2027–2032.
- Government claims this will produce emissions reductions equivalent to a 75% EV adoption rate by 2035 — though officials admitted they don’t yet have modelling to prove that.

EV Rebates Return
- A new five‑year rebate program begins in 2026:
- Up to $5,000 for battery‑electric and fuel‑cell vehicles
- Up to $2,500 for plug‑in hybrids
- Rebates will decrease each year until 2030.

A step back but not a retreat. Consolidate the industry and then harmonize with Europe standards. Ditch the expensive US model that churns out monster trucks and focus on making cheap, reliable cars once again.
