Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez:

Starting next week, my government will implement the following actions:

First, we will change the law in Spain to hold platform executives legally accountable for many infringements taking place on their sites.

Second, we will turn algorithmic manipulation and amplification of illegal content into a new criminal offense.

Third, we will implement a hate and polarization footprint system to track, quantify, and expose how digital platforms fuel division and amplify hate.

Fourth, Spain will ban access to social media for minors under the age of 16. Platforms will be required to implement effective age verification systems — not just checkboxes, but real barriers that work.

Fifth and last, my government will work with our public prosecutor to investigate and pursue the infringement committed by Grok, TikTok, and Instagram.

Telegram and X both have utility even now even when the platforms themselves are overrun by bots/bad faith actors/biased standards. So why doesn't Canada have it's own social media platform? When disaster strikes coms are haphazard at best. Emergency one way text isn't a great plan to coordinate relief efforts. Add to that an electronic town hall square that isn't rigged with bots from foreign actors would be in the nations interest.

We had our own platform, but the owner was absent for long periods and weeks long outages and everyone stopped posting.

We did have MP's post there but no buy in by federal, provincial or municipal bodies. They would only use Facebook, instagram and Twitter because that is what everyone else was using. There was no intent or policy so we ended up having taxpayer money fund oligarchs and pedofiles.
