Executives will return to office for full 5 days, Treasury Board says

How do you say downsizing without saying it

Dumb. I am not government, but contract to a provincial government.

Even if I were in the office, I am still remote to my work. No advantage, all downside.

The choice should be up to the team. Everyone is different.

True, however if you want to thin the workforce and you have exhausted early retirement and stop/slowed hiring then to lower the working conditions is the only option left. It IS shooting the foot of the organization but if the goal is to get small then you take away perks even it it makes you less efficient.

Early retirement offer to federal public servants causing ‘chaos’ in public service: union

Ding! Ding!

He is pulling all the stops to downsize as much and as fast as he can. Stats Canada is seen as overhead, not a preemptive service. Anything not focused on getting costs down is to be cut. That's the only principal here. Like a bird of prey gaining altitude that then trims the wings for a dive to focus on the target. We can rebuild after the storm abates.

The workforce is pretty thin right now. I work on a team that used to be 12, now we are 3, Same workload.

Most of the infrastructure has been farmed out and irtualized, and the margins are so tight that we can't request any new 'hardware' because no room is available. Normally we'd just order new hardware, rack and provision it. But that is outsourced now, and they provisioned so much that nothing can be added unless something is first deleted. And you can't do upgrades that way. You need to run side by side until the cutover.
