Mexican officials report that Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed today during a Mexican Army operation.
According to initial reporting, the mission was intended to capture Cervantes. A gunfight ensued during the operation, resulting in his death.
In response, CJNG elements have initiated widespread blockades across six Mexican states.
Authorities have declared a “Code Red” mobilization as at least fifteen cities report cartel-linked unrest, a figure expected to rise as developments continue.

Re: Cartel attacks
For everyone trying to understand what’s happening in Mexico: first of all, let’s understand who was reportedly killed:
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho is the alleged founder and top leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), As a teenager, he migrated illegally to the United States, where he was later arrested in the early 1990s for drug-related offenses and eventually deported back to Mexico.
After returning, he became involved with the Milenio Cartel, which was aligned with the Sinaloa Cartel. Following the death of Ignacio Nacho Coronel in 2010 and the fragmentation of the Milenio Cartel, Oseguera helped form what became the CJNG. Over the next decade, he transformed it into one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in Mexico.
CJNG’s stronghold has been the state of Jalisco, but it expanded aggressively into Michoacán, Colima, Guanajuato, Veracruz, Guerrero, Nayarit, Baja California and beyond. The cartel developed international trafficking routes to the United States, Europe and Asia. At its height, CJNG operated in more than 10 states and became known for its militarized structure, use of armored vehicles, heavy-caliber weapons and coordinated large-scale blockades.
Its main rivals have included the Sinaloa Cartel, local criminal groups in Guanajuato such as the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, remnants of Los Zetas, and self-defense militias in Michoacán. CJNG gained a reputation for brutal retaliation and direct confrontations with Mexican security forces.
Now, following reports that El Mencho was killed, widespread violence has been reported across multiple states. Road blockades, burning vehicles, attacks on businesses, and highway closures are occurring in Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato and other regions. Authorities are reinforcing state borders and urging civilians to avoid major roads.
