Hantavirus

Post by Dr Strangelove »

Hantavirus is incredibly deadly.

One of the only reasons that we don't have an issue with it, is we've never seen any outbreaks manage to evolve human-to-human transmission before.

It's always been rodent-to-human contact.

If we have H2H in Hantavirus that ship needs to be stranded at sea until every, single, person is cleared.

Because that would make the previous pandemic look like childs play.

Hantavirus in South America is slightly different than North, and has been known to do H2H transmission,

I guess it's just a local thing. We know that deer mice (you can tell by the ears) carry hantavirus, and you never sweep up droppings dry. Always wet them first.

Key Events and Situation:

The Outbreak: The ship departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st, 2026. The first symptoms appeared around April 6th, and the situation escalated as multiple passengers fell ill with respiratory distress (1:20 - 2:40).
Casualties: So far, there have been three confirmed deaths and at least eight suspected or confirmed cases among passengers and crew (0:48 - 0:54, 3:45 - 4:47).
Quarantine: Due to the risk of human-to-human transmission—a rare but concerning characteristic of the Andes strain—local authorities have prohibited the ship from docking, forcing all ~150 passengers into cabin quarantine (0:12 - 0:40, 4:48 - 4:55).
Scientific Context:

Nature of the Virus: Hantavirus is typically transmitted via contact with rodent excrement (dried urine or feces), but this specific Andes strain has shown instances of rare human-to-human transmission (5:28 - 6:08, 9:10 - 9:25).
Symptoms & Progression: Early symptoms resemble the flu (fever, aches), but the virus can quickly lead to severe respiratory issues and fluid in the lungs. It is life-threatening and currently has no vaccine or specific cure (2:00 - 2:11, 6:33 - 6:53).
Uncertainty: Experts are investigating whether the infection was brought on board from Argentina or if there is an active source of the virus still present on the ship, leading to a 21-day quarantine period to monitor for new cases (7:50 - 9:07).

🚨BREAKING: Health officials are now monitoring people in at least three US states for hantavirus exposure.

All linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak.

8 cases. 3 dead. Mortality rate up to 50%.

23 passengers already returned home before the outbreak was confirmed.

One is already sick.

Arizona, California, Georgia.

This is the worst possible time for an outbreak with a 50% mortality rate to go international.

This is the most concerning part of the Hantavirus saga so far:

1) The sick woman was removed *before* the flight so that flight attendant had *MINIMAL* contact with her.

2) Andes Hantavirus normally only spreads human-to-human with significant long term contact.

3) This version of the virus often also has a longer incubation period, so having symptoms already is surprising.

The cases on the ship can happen due to the contained space.

This is the first case where the odds should have been *REALLY* low of the flight attendant getting sick.

These traits suggest a possible mutation.

What that specifically entails, we don't know yet.

The hope is that it was just a *very* unlucky situation without mutations.

One of the clear lessons of the hantavirus outbreak is that *chance* makes a huge difference to how a disease can spread.

The Andes strain of the virus causes 100s of human infections every year, but most burn out almost immediately.

Occasionally, there is a bigger outbreak fueled by human-to-human transmission but these are rare.

The pattern is a feature of almost all zoonotic spillover events, millions of which happen each year involving thousands of different pathogens.

Mercifully, most go nowhere. They flare then vanish.

Now enter *chance* – a series of unforeseen but often predictable environmental circumstances or events.

A wet market, a trunk road, a game of beer-pong … or in this case, a hop-on-hop-off international cruise with connecting flights.

The map below shows the 12 countries that passengers flew to after disembarking one leg of the cruise in St Helena in late April.

30 passengers disembarked there, one dead, but no one knew then about the disease to which they had been exposed.

The outbreak has been serious, with three dead and at least five suspected cases so far.

About 150 remain on the ship, while hundreds of potential secondary contacts are being traced and asked to isolate around the world.

Nevertheless, the chances are that *this* outbreak will die out too.

The virus does not appear to spread efficiently enough to sustain itself, even with the circumstances it has been handed.

But here’s the thing: it’s a numbers game.

Look again at that map and consider where we would be if the virus was more infectious, or had mutated to become so.

It is why the World Health Organization and pandemic planning is so important.

Canadian cruise passenger isolating in B.C. tests 'presumptive positive' for hantavirus
The patient is hospitalized in isolation in Victoria.

Symptoms remain mild, and the patient is considered stable.

Their partner has tested negative but is also being monitored in hospital.

A third cruise passenger isolating in B.C. was transferred to hospital out of caution, though they have not tested positive.
