Snowbirds to be grounded until early 2030s while new planes are acquired
What exactly was announced
Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the Snowbirds will be mothballed after the 2026 season.
The team will remain inactive until new CT‑157 Siskin II aircraft arrive, expected in the early 2030s.
No precise year is given — procurement negotiations are still underway.
The 2026 season will be the final year the Snowbirds fly the CT‑114 Tutor, which has been in service since the 1960s.
What replaces the Tutors
The replacement aircraft is the CT‑157 Siskin II, a Swiss‑made turboprop (Pilatus PC‑21).
These aircraft are already being delivered for pilot training; the Snowbirds’ additional aircraft will be added to that order.
The new fleet is expected to restore the nine‑plane formation once operational.

Re: Snowbirds to be grounded until early 2030s while new planes are acquired
The Announcement: On May 19, 2026, Minister of National Defence David McGuinty and RCAF Commander Lt. Gen. Jamie Speiser-Blanchet confirmed that the Snowbirds will cease operations at the end of the 2026 air show season (1:37-1:45).
Reasoning: The decision is attributed to the aging fleet of CT-114 Tutor jets, which have been in service for decades (1:47-1:51).
Future Plans: The government claims this is a "temporary" pause until the 2030s, intending to replace the fleet with the CT-157 Syscen 2 (a turboprop aircraft) to maintain commonality with new RCAF pilot training programs (2:01-2:25).
Critical Analysis: The narrator, Scott Taylor, expresses skepticism regarding the government's promise to revive the squadron. He argues that due to a "crippling" pilot shortage and ongoing operational requirements for NATO and NORAD, it is unlikely the RCAF will be able to justify reconstituting a demonstration team in the future (4:11-4:44).
The video concludes by suggesting that this effectively marks the end of the Snowbirds as a long-standing Canadian icon (4:55-5:05).
TLDR, RIP snowbirds they are never coming back. At least not as we know them and that is a good thing. Would love to see a CAF drone swarm.

Better that they retired before an unfortunate accident.
