Guilbeault to resign as MP over climate policy

Post by Dr Strangelove »

Reason for Resignation: Guilbeault's decision is primarily driven by his opposition to the federal government's shift in climate policy, specifically regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alberta (1:31-1:40). He has voiced concerns about the rollback of key climate commitments, such as the postponement of the effective carbon price of $130 a ton to 2040 instead of 2030, and the weakening of methane and clean electricity regulations (2:02-2:33).
Political Significance: As a prominent figure in Quebec and a leader within the progressive flank of the Liberal Party, his departure is seen as a significant blow to the Carney government (0:46-0:55, 3:07-3:14). It highlights a deepening divide over environmental policy and may signal frustration among progressive voters who supported the party in the last election (3:15-3:28).
Impact on Government: While the immediate political damage to the Carney government's popularity might be limited by current polling, the loss of another MP (following others like Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Jonathan Wilkinson) could reduce the size of the government's majority, leaving them with 171 seats (3:43-3:53). Furthermore, this resignation may escalate pressure from the progressive wing of the party in the long term (3:54-4:00).

The chance of the Tories winning a byelection there is slim to none. They gonna punish the Libs for backing down a bit on climate change for a party claiming it's not even real and going out of there way to destroy every environmental move ever made?

In that seat no doubt but there is a cadre of liberals that were all in on fighting the good fight of environmental crusaders. Much has changed since 2015 and new marching orders have been issued under the new leadership. It is rumored that 8-12 mp's will take this departure as a marker of where they stand. They may end up serving their term then retiring or they could sit as independants. I doubt the NDP will gather any steam from this but there is some disharmony under the huge tent the liberals now have. As long as Carney keeps the tempo of big ticket trade deals the peace should hold however. I know the targets for 2050 are now beyond reach but they were hollow targets if the rest of the world wasn't going to do them either.

Now that the US has broken free of the west to become a new version of Russia that threat at our doorstep will keep the radicals in the liberal party in line as the fear of a loose cannon down south is much worse than not meeting climate goals.

The Reason for Resignation: Guilbeault cites the government's "backsliding" on climate action, specifically criticizing an energy agreement between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Danielle Smith that could facilitate the construction of a new pipeline by 2027. Guilbeault notes that the Liberal campaign platform mentioned climate change 28 times but did not mention pipelines once (0:01-0:06, 1:25-2:00).
Guilbeault's Activist Past: The host reflects on Guilbeault’s history as a prominent Greenpeace activist, most notably his 2001 climb of the CN Tower to hang a banner protesting climate inaction (3:06-3:58).
Critiques of Mark Carney: The video argues that Carney is moving the Liberal Party to the right and abandoning climate commitments. It highlights a letter from 14 Liberal MPs raising similar concerns, noting that Guilbeault is the only one to publicly resign (5:00-5:10, 9:04-10:13).
Reactions from Other Leaders:
Avi Lewis (NDP) and Elizabeth May (Green Party) expressed disappointment and support for Guilbeault’s decision, framing it as a failure of the current government’s climate urgency (10:49-12:15).
Pierre Poilievre (Conservative) dismissed the departure as performative, claiming that both Carney and Guilbeault have supported the same "radical" policies for years (12:34-13:05).
Conclusion: The host suggests that Carney’s current strategy—attempting to appease various political factions through compromise—will likely alienate both traditional Liberal voters and climate advocates without actually resolving the underlying political polarization in Canada (14:38-15:45).

Steven Guilbeault’s Resignation (8:56 - 17:06):
Climate advocate and cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault announced his resignation, citing frustration with the government's climate direction (9:02-9:10). The panel discusses how this departure signals a shift in the government's priorities—potentially moving away from the climate infrastructure established by Justin Trudeau—and the political implications this has for the Liberal party in Quebec (11:10-12:43, 14:15-15:45).
