Bill S-206: Will Canada Get a Guaranteed Livable Basic Income?
Objectives and Potential Benefits
Proponents of Bill S-206 argue that a GLBI could transform Canada’s social safety net. By ensuring a baseline income, the bill aims to:

Reduce Poverty: Provide financial stability to low-income individuals, helping them afford essentials like housing, food, and healthcare.
Simplify Welfare Systems: Replace or streamline existing social assistance programs, reducing bureaucratic overhead.
Support Economic Resilience: Enable Canadians to pursue education, entrepreneurship, or caregiving without financial strain.
Address Inequality: Narrow the wealth gap in a country where rising costs have outpaced wage growth for many.
Supporters, including advocates like @JustinDart82 on X, frame the bill as a response to systemic challenges, noting that it could alleviate the struggles of those feeling “stuck” or “burnt out” by economic pressures. The bill’s introduction aligns with global discussions on universal basic income (UBI), with proponents citing successful trials in countries like Finland as evidence of its potential.
Anyone's guess if it will pass but even if it doesn't the conversation will not die down. IMHO we need to scrap social programs en masse and simplify the standards federally and provincially. This is a tool that can make that happen.

This is how Carney pays for things. Cut bureaucracy that only is an expense, and use the money elsewhere. If everyone has a basic income, you don't need old age security or welfare. Lather, rinse repeat.

You don't need old age security or welfare, CPP, EI, GAIN, GST rebates, etc. etc. etc.

You don't need umpteen bureaucracies, just one.
But it's just too much common sense.
How can we keep the tens of thousands of minions searching for ways to disqualify you?

Clarifying the Terminology (0:48 - 1:45): There isn't just one type of UBI. It represents a family of models—including universal payments, means-tested income, and negative income taxes—all aimed at ensuring citizens can meet their basic needs.
Legislative Progress (2:16 - 4:00): The discussion is active in the Canadian Parliament. Bill S-206, introduced by Senator Kim Pate, advocates for a national framework. The narrator clarifies that the previous Bill S-233 did not fail due to rejection, but rather due to a procedural end to the parliamentary session.
Addressing Past 'Failures' (4:01 - 6:19): Critics often point to past pilot projects as failures, but the video argues otherwise:
Mincome (1974-1979): The study showed positive outcomes in health and education before being cancelled due to a change in government political priorities.
Ontario Basic Income Pilot (2017-2018): This was cancelled prematurely by the incoming provincial government before meaningful data could be finalized.
Why Now? (6:20 - 8:07): The debate is intensifying due to persistent economic challenges: housing affordability, wage stagnation, economic insecurity, and the rise of artificial intelligence and automation.
What Can You Do? (8:08 - 9:31):
The creator encourages supporters to engage in the democratic process: talk about the issue, write to MPs and Senators, participate in consultations, and vote. Policy shifts happen when voters demand change.

Coming up later in the series:
The next episode will address the economic feasibility of UBI and explore the question: Where does the money come from?
