'Vicious compliance': Alberta premier decries Edmonton Public Schools' banned book list
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith slammed the Edmonton Public School Board Friday morning for its banned book list, which features more than 200 titles.

The internally distributed list, which CBC News obtained Thursday, was in response to a provincial government directive to identify books that are not age-appropriate and remove them from school library shelves.

But the list included titles like The Handmaid's Tale, The Color Purple, The Godfather and Jaws. Books from authors like George R. R. Martin, Sarah J. Maas and Maya Angelou are also on the list.

"Edmonton Public is clearly doing a little vicious compliance over what the direction is," Smith said during an unrelated news conference.

Zero sense of self reflection. It's all their fault, not ours for being too vague.

Oh look! They now say they really said 'images' 'porongraphic images' It's funny how many times Marlania said ' Pornographic Images' in a news conference yesterday.

We actually read the order. The word 'images' was nowhere to be found. They want to ban Hustler from school Libraries. Like every kid over 9 doesn't have a phone that can get 'Pornhub'.

Well they backed off and rewrote the law so it only bans graphic images.
So Lolita and Lady Chatterly's Lover can go back in the school library, but not the Chareston Classic Comic versions.

I'm pretty sure Hustler and Penthouse were never in my school library.

It's easy to issue book bans for things that don't exist. And another example of tyranny of the minority. It was a couple Karens in the bible belt who started the whole thing. Who are they to determine what everyone elses' kid learns?

They were in the lockers though weren't they?
And most the confiscated ones were in the teacher's staff room too.
I know the Zap, Freak Bros, Harold Hedd and Lampoons made it in there!

If you grew up in the Lower Mainland back then Harold Hedd was the 'famous' one. Contributed to the Georgia Straight when it was the Underground paper (now an Entertainment Weekly like paper) and had tons of Vancouver, western Canada references. The White Lunch, the Hastings Express etc etc.

A bud and I used to do that in the summer. Out late, still light out, we'd see a cop at a distance, on our bikes.

We'd point at him, and scurry off in different a direction. We knew the alleys better than the new recruits, so a couple turns and we'd lose him.

Fun and games.
