B.C.'s international student permit crisis explained

Post by Dr Strangelove »

It can't be a lie if you are not listening

Program Integrity and Enforcement Issues
Lack of Investigation: The report found that while over 150,000 students were flagged for potential non-compliance in 2023-2024, only about 3,000 to 4,000 cases were investigated
Unrealistic Growth Strategy: Richard Kurland argues that the previous strategy aimed to rapidly increase Canada's population using temporary status holders, prioritizing growth over program integrity
Consequences for Housing and Jobs: The sudden influx of international students placed pressure on housing supplies and increased competition for entry-level jobs against Canadians
Document Fraud: The auditor general discovered that 800 cases with fraudulent documentation were not followed up on, and half of those individuals were subsequently approved for extensions or permanent residency

Impact on B.C. Post-Secondary Sector
Financial Instability: The 66% drop in permits has caused significant financial instability for public post-secondary institutions, leading to revenue losses and layoffs
Lack of Consultation: Minister Jessie Sunner emphasizes that these federal changes were made without proper consultation or lead time for provinces to prepare
New Regulatory Measures: B.C. has passed the Post-Secondary Designated Institutions Act (Bill 7) to enforce stricter quality standards on institutions hosting international students
One of the major findings in this auditor general report was that the immigration system can't keep up with the demand for student permit investigations. Um the report found 150,000 cases were flagged between 2023 and 2024. Just 4,000 investigations wereost were launched rather. um a and many of the students who were brought here as students have been completely lost track
